The koru (Māori for "loop") is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos. The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin.

The koru is used in a stylised form as the logo of Air New Zealand and as an iconic symbol of New Zealand flora.

The fern, which is the design featured in this bowl, has been adopted as a national symbol of New Zealand. Widely recognized worldwide, the Silver Fern is representative of New Zealand and its people. It is an image to which all New Zealanders relate and is a powerful and emotional symbol of inspiration.

The silver fern, which grows as far as 45 degrees south, takes its name from the light under side of the fronds which can be used as a signpost for travelers in the bush with the tips pointing the way.
