Pair of Fern Frond Porcelain Dipping Bowls in MADINZ Presentation Box
The koru (Māori for "loop") is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos. The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin.
The koru is used in a stylised form as the logo of Air New Zealand and as an iconic symbol of New Zealand flora.
The unfurling fern frond, which is the design featured in this bowl, is symbolic of the everlasting cycle, growing friendship and an ever-closer bonding.
These bowls are made from white porcelain, inside semi-gloss clear glaze with decal and unglazed outside and shown in irregular shape and form; part of the organic nature of the collection.
