Manaia-Hei Matau Sculpture in MADINZ Presentation Box
MANAIA – Head of the Sculpture
The Manaia is an ancient mythical being believed to be a holder of great spiritual energy and a guardian against evil. It can be seen blended into many Māori designs with subtle differences between tribes.
The Guardian Spirit plays an important role in the Māori World. To the Māori every person on Earth has a Guardian Spirit to guide them through life.
The Manaia is an Iwi Spiritual Guardian, Provider and Protector over the air, waters and land. They normally have the head of a bird (sky), the body of a man (earth) and the tail of a fish (sea) symbolic of the balance they have between all three realms.
HEI MATAU
A skillful fisherman became a very important person in the tribe and his success was attributed to his hook whose ‘mana’ or presence pleased the spirits. Such a hook was given a personal name and was greatly treasured. Legend tells that the demi-God Maui used a hook made from his grandmother’s jawbone to fish the North Island of New Zealand from the depths of the sea.
The fishhook has several meanings including strength, determination, good luck and safe travel across water.
It is believed to bring peace, prosperity and good health.
