A skillful fisherman became a very important person in the tribe and his success was attributed to his hook whose ‘mana’ or presence pleased the spirits. Such a hook was given a personal name and was greatly treasured. Legend says that the demi-God Maui used a hook made from his grandmother’s jawbone to fish the North Island of New Zealand from the depths of the sea.

The fishhook has several meanings including strength, determination, good luck and safe travel across water.

It is believed to bring peace, prosperity and good health.

These sculptures are an ideal corporate gift and also very popular as a conference speakers’ gift or award.
